Water hyacinth is known for its elastic yet tough property which are turned into green fibres for handicrafts. In Assam we call it “Pani Meteka”. It is found in pond, lakes and river streams. Ditul started his business career with beetle nut i.e supari. He faced severe losses in the business but he never surrendered and started making bags, vases, yoga mats, dying mats, curtains etc from Pani Meteka.

He is born and brought up in Dhing, Nagaon. He is well aware of the availability of water hyacinth. Ditul feels that the raw material of Thailand is more lighter than the local raw materials. Presently more than 150 people are working with him. All of them now lead a self dependent life. He has also more than 50 people who are supplying raw materials to him. Presently he has one showroom at the heart of the city. Ditul is happy because he is able to create a platform for the unemployed people of his village.

Failure as a stepping stone to success. Ditul Bora’s story from beetle nut “supari” to water hyacinth “Pani Meteka”

We at Peepal Tree have connected with various water hyacinth community units who are involved in making of these hand crafted utility products. We assist the artisans through workshops, trainings and media coverage to strengthen their business.

Peepal Tree is preparing an extensive portfolio of designs that can be hand crafted using the existing technology and human resources.
